Sugar Land School Adds More Lifesaving Equipment After Student Suffered Heart Attack at Gym

SUGAR LAND, Texas “The Logos Prep Academy in Sugar Land says that all faculty and staff receive regular CPR training.

“We train not only to get it right, but also to get it right,” said school nurse Kathy Halbert.

This month, when an opposing team student had a heart attack at the gym, the workout came in handy.

Athletic director Bennett Murff said several people jumped in without wondering how to react. The student is reported to be feeling better.

Now Logos Prep plans to add more automated defibrillators, even if they are off campus. They plan to travel with them.

“Every time you go to another facility you just make the assumption that they have the AED and we were willing to spend money to rid us of that assumption and we know that the AED is always with our team,” said Murph.

According to the latest data from the CDC, 66 athletes die each year from sudden cardiac arrest in the United States.

Laws that require AEDs vary, but Texas schools are required to have them on campus. But this may not include athletics facilities that are not schools.

AEDs also need annual maintenance to work effectively and should be located anywhere a cardiac event could occur.

“You have six minutes to restore blood flow to the brain,” said Matthew Lester.

Lester is a firefighter who works at Reign Roofing. Upon learning of the heart attack at Logos Prep, Reign Roofing pledged to donate AED once a month to local organizations. Their first generous donation was made to the school this week.

AED is easy to use. It has sophisticated technology that speaks directions. This is not shocking to anyone, unless the machine discovers that it is necessary.
