Authorities said a 16-year-old boy who was stabbed to death in a fight Wednesday morning at Santa Rosa High School has been identified as Jayden Jess Pienta.

A junior at Montgomery High School, Pienta was stabbed at least three times during a fight in art class.

School staff called the police at 11:11 a.m. to report a fight, Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Christopher Makhurin said. When officers arrived at 11:15 a.m., they found two boys with stab wounds and began rescue operations.

The injured were taken to the hospital, where Pienta died. Another student, also a 16-year-old junior, was stabbed at least once but is expected to recover.

The stabbing suspect, a 15-year-old high school freshman, escaped and was eventually found by authorities hiding near a creek on Highway 12 and Farmers Lane. He was taken into custody and taken to the Sonoma County Juvenile Justice Center on suspicion of crimes including murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon on campus.

According to investigators, the stabbing was preceded by a quarrel. Around 11 a.m., Pienta and another 16-year-old junior entered an art class they did not attend and a fight broke out with the 15-year-old freshman, police said.

“The class teacher and three assistants were able to briefly stop the fight, but the three students quickly started fighting again,” Makhurin said.

According to police, the 15-year-old brandished a knife and allegedly stabbed both 16-year-olds. The suspect then fled the classroom and fled the school campus, while the two injured students went to the school’s medical room. There were 27 other students in the classroom at the time of the fight, authorities said.

“It’s a really sad day,” Santa Rosa School Principal Anna Trannell said at a press conference. “The tragedy that happened here today is heartbreaking.”

Santa Rosa police detectives investigate the cause of the fight and student relations.
