‘Strong little girl’: Newborn found abandoned on street, Sheriff Polk says

POLK COUNTY, Florida. – Polk County deputies, responding early Saturday to a report of a crying baby near Mulberry, found an abandoned newborn who was estimated to be only an hour old, according to a press release.

Deputies headed to the Mulberry area around 1:47 a.m., reaching a small hill near a mobile home park on Regel Loop to find the girl wrapped in a blanket, the report said.

Polk County Fire and Rescue officials estimated that the baby was born about an hour early, based on the girl’s body temperature. Temperatures in the area were below 50 degrees at the time, according to the sheriff’s office.

The girl was taken to the hospital, where, according to the latest reports, she was healthy and stable, while the police searched the area in search of her mother; although a K-9 unit, an aviation unit and a bloodhound assisted knocking MPs in their search, those efforts have so far been unsuccessful, the report said.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd thanked the Lord that the girl got better.

“By the grace of God, we found the abandoned girl when we did, before the cold or any animals did her any harm. She was left in a highly vulnerable state, but she is a strong little girl and seems to be doing well,” Judd said in a statement.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind mothers of the Florida Safe Haven Act, passed in 2000, which allows parents to leave their unharmed newborn baby (under a week of age) in any safe facility (hospitals or properly staffed ambulance/fire stations) ). ) anonymously and without fear of prosecution.
