Stranded hiker rescued off Midi Rock Beach in San Mateo County

Early Sunday morning, the US Coast Guard rescued a stranded tourist on Midsel Rock Beach.

Coast Guard officials said the 24-year-old hiker contacted them at 4:25 am. He said he was stuck on the beach, unable to climb the rock.

After the arrival of the San Mateo County Fire Department at 6 a.m., a Coast Guard helicopter crew arrived. Rescuers lowered a rescuer to him, put him in a helicopter and took him to San Francisco Air Force Base for medical attention.

“This rescue operation was successful due to the tourist’s ability to contact first responders,” said San Francisco Coast Guard Lieutenant Commander Dave Herndon. “The Coast Guard is asking people to make a plan before exploring the beautiful coast of Northern California. Be sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear, stay hydrated, let friends or family know about your plan, and always have a strong means of communication to reach first responders.”
