Steph Curry says ‘not in my backyard’ to new homes in suburban Swanky Bay

Steph and Aisha Curry are asking the city of Atherton not to allow multi-family development near their home as they consider how to meet the government deadline later this month.

On Jan. 18, the Curries sent a letter citing the privacy and safety of their children as reasons against denser housing near their home in the Bay Area’s ultra-posh suburb.

“We’re hesitant to add ‘not in our backyard’ (literally) to the rhetoric, but we wanted to send a note ahead of today’s meeting,” Curry wrote. “Safety and privacy for us and our children continues to be our top priority and one of the main reasons we chose Atherton as our home.”

The couple are opposed to the city’s decision earlier this month to expand the zone or allow more units at 23 Oakwood Boulevard. It’s near Currie’s home on Selby Lane, where the developer plans to build more than a dozen townhouses.

Curry isn’t the only power couple opposing denser housing in Atherton: venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and his wife Laura Arrillaga-Andreessen have also raised “huge” objections to the development of apartment buildings in the area.

“Please IMMEDIATELY REMOVE all apartment building zoning projects from the Housing Element that will be presented to the state in July,” wrote an outraged Andreessens in a 2022 letter.

The 5-square-mile luxury city of Atherton is one of America’s wealthiest enclaves, with an average home price above $8 million and high-profile residents including billionaires and industry titans.

The Almanac, which first reported on Curry’s letter, wrote that Atherton City Council voted in favor of zoning amid concerns about “builder’s medicine”.

If the city doesn’t adopt a state-approved housing plan called the Housing Element by the end of the month, it could lose control of its own zoning, paving the way for much larger property development.

Atherton plans to vote on the housing element on January 31st.
