State Senator Gutierrez Introduces New Gun Reform Bill With Uvalde Families

Austin – On Tuesday, several families of Uvalde’s victims, along with State Senator Roland Gutierrez, were in Austin, marking the fourth time he has introduced a package of laws aimed at protecting children from gun violence.

“In Texas, someone gets shot every two hours,” said state senator Sarah Eckhardt. “Death by firearms is the leading cause of death for children in Texas.”

A week after the mass gun violence prevention rally, the families of Uvalde’s victims returned to Austin with Gutierrez as he introduced new gun reform legislation.

“What they are asking for is at least the bare minimum in this state. And this is the minimum that sets the age limit, which sets the base for the purchase of ammunition, ”said Gutierrez.

On Tuesday, five bills were added to that list of requests.

Senate Bill 1737: Ban on Expanding Bullets.

SB 1736: closes loopholes in gun shows.

SB 1740: Expands gun storage and security requirements.

SB: 1739: Life imprisonment without parole for school shooters.

Rosie Janas Stone, who lost her son Chris in the Santa Fe High School shooting, wrote to Gutierrez about SB 1739.

“She says, ‘My son will never lay claim to life, why would a school killer?'” Gutierrez said after reading her words.

SB 1738: Automatic suspension of law enforcement involved in the shooting of a child.

Brett Cross, Uzia Garcia’s guardian, refers to SB 1738 as Ouzia’s law.

“I’m so tired of everything being politicized. This is not a left thing. It is not right. It’s fucking common sense,” Cross said.

Ouzia was killed along with his classmates and teachers at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022.

Their families stand together, vowing not to let another child suffer the same fate.

“Common-sense gun safety decisions don’t require the moon and stars,” Gutiérrez said.

Since the start of the season, Gutierrez and several of his colleagues have filed 21 pieces of legislation regarding gun reform in 21 lives taken from Robb.

The deadline for filing new legislation is this Friday.
