Spring Break in Fort Myers Beach after Hurricane Jan

Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Tonight we’re asking the question… what does spring break look like here in southwest Florida?

It’s been 6 months since Hurricane Jan, and much of Fort Myers Beach is still closed. It may be too early for some to see crowded beaches, but people still come to the island.

As people hunt down the many license plates from other states, some people are shocked to see what the area looks like.

Emily Wall of Paradise Parasail Inc. has been trying to answer questions about the aftermath of the hurricane for six months. But now people are asking other questions, like… where are the toilets? Where can you buy beach towels? And where can we eat?

Despite the nails and bits of metal in the sand, the dead fish from the red tide, the parking lots are crammed with out-of-state license plates, and the beaches are crammed too.

For those who see all this for the first time since Hurricane Yang –

“I was a little shocked to see that everything was destroyed. It’s shocking and saddening when everything disappears,” says Amelia Klotz, who arrived for spring break from New York.

Carol Barberi, visiting from Chicago, added: “We don’t see anything open – I don’t even know where people and children are staying.”

Many tell me they rent, stay in Naples, or find hotels in Cape Coral and Fort Myers, but no one I’ve spoken to actually stays overnight in Fort Myers Beach.

“It’s a little frustrating because a few years ago and last year we saw the whole beach and it was beautiful down here, but now there’s a lot of debris,” says Sara Boyce.

Several open businesses tell me that they are doing well. “Didn’t expect us to even open at this point, but I’m glad we’re open and people are coming and supporting all the local businesses which are pretty cool,” explains Emily Wall of Paradise Parasail Inc.

Despite all the devastation, most are trying to make the most of their spring break.

“It will take a long time to recover this is very, very sad. It’s even worse than I thought it would be, I thought some businesses might be open or some hotels that didn’t suffer as much damage could be reopened, but we don’t see anything open,” Ray and Carol say Barbary.

Most recently, a doctor told us in a Red Tide interview that people should wear shoes on our beaches because you just don’t know what you might step on from Hurricane Yang.
