Software update now available for Kia and Hyundai owners amid rising theft

SAN ANTONIO – Increasing number of thefts of older models of KIA and Hyundai vehicles requires driver software updates.

Brian Rodriguez of Ancira KIA says cars older than 2022 can be upgraded.

“This update is for dealer only and must be performed on a KIA computer. You can’t take it, you know, to an aftermarket shop. You cannot do this at home. It depends on the particular dealer,” he explained.

Owners can receive a letter by mail. They can also call their local dealers to schedule any necessary upgrades.

A visit to a car dealership can take about an hour, but will save people from mental anguish.

“From start to finish, from arriving at the dealership to checking out the car, we search for about an hour. It’s like updating your iPhone. You just load the program into the machine,” Rodriguez said.

The software makes it so that you need the key in the ignition to start the car. At the end, an upgrade sticker is placed on the vehicles to deter thieves.

Rodriguez says people should be aware of the precautions to stop thieves, no matter what vehicle they drive.

“Whether it’s a KIA or any other make or model, if they want to steal it, they’ll steal it. You cannot stop them,” he said.
