Snowless New York breaks 50-year record for longest winter without hurricanes

New York met with a cold reception.

Forgoing a White Christmas, this winter the Big Apple settled for hurricanes that turned to rain before hitting the pavement. No snowball fights, sledding in Central Park, or snowy days — instead, a new record has been broken for the longest snowless season the city has seen in 50 years.

“The record for the last measurable snow is set today — and it will obviously be too hot to see anything resembling snow,” Fox Weather meteorologist Christopher Tate told The Post.

“The last recorded first snow is January 29, 1973, and we will interrupt it today because we will not see snow today,” he said.

Packed snow needs both rainfall and cold air, and New York hasn’t had optimal conditions this winter, even after several winter storms swept through the region last week.

“This winter has been very, very, very mild for New York. This winter has been unseasonably warm so far,” Tate said.

“The times we had moisture were just too warm to support anything other than the three times we’ve seen storms this season.”

The last time there was noticeable snow in New York was 326 days ago on March 9, 2022, when a full four tenths of an inch fell. Usually by mid-December, the first measurable snow falls in the city. It happened on Christmas Eve last year, according to the Weather Channel.

Meteorologists consider measurable snow to be more than a footprint, even if it is only one-tenth of an inch. Only a small amount of snow has been recorded in Central Park since last fall, more than 30 cm below the average snowfall for the season to date.

However, the lack of snow is not unique to New York City; other cities along the I-95 corridor, such as Philadelphia and Boston, also experience snow shortages. Recent storm tracks have brought snow to parts of the interior northeast, but also pulled warm air into the I-95 corridor, resulting in rain.

Despite this seemingly snowless season, New York’s snowiest month is February, according to the Weather Channel, meaning a snowstorm could hit the Big Apple in the coming weeks.

“There are some very, very early indications that something could happen later this week or early next week,” Tate said, noting that snow opportunities are somewhat limited right now. “I haven’t invested in this yet.
