Skimmers used to steal banking information found in SACU ATMs

The San Jose State University Police Department is issuing an alert after a machine used to steal banking information was found in at least two ATMs on campus.

The skimming device is used to access account information or identity theft.

“These skimmers are internal,” Captain Frank Belcastro said. “They are not visible from the outside, so you never know they are inside. And even if you looked through the gap, you wouldn’t see it.”

He said part of the skimmer is a camera so the scammer can remove the pins when people press the buttons.

Skimmers were found in two ATMs, and it is not known how long they were there.

So, the university police alerted the entire campus to check their bank accounts and report any theft or fraud.

“Pretty scary. But I keep my credit cards safe. From time to time I check my monthly reports,” said student Kim Colton.

They also advise everyone to change the pin periodically.

The police have not yet received any reports of fraud, but they know that students are among the most vulnerable targets.

“Our students, as a rule, are not rich. other people use it [ATM] too much. Criminals, they don’t care who they target,” Belcastro said.

Police said criminals are always looking for new technologies to steal information and people’s hard-earned money.
