Six tourism-related organizations received the Caribbean CTO Award for Sustainable Tourism

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) announced the winners of the 2022 Caribbean Sustainable Tourism Awards at a virtual award ceremony on February 15, 2023.

CTO has been hosting the Caribbean Sustainable Tourism Awards since 2000 to mark the start of the new millennium in an effort to support and promote sustainable tourism in the Caribbean.

The award aims to identify and showcase sustainable tourism excellence implemented in Caribbean CTO member countries and is open to sole proprietorships, destination management organizations, tourism companies and others who have developed innovative products, services or experiences related to tourism, and in their implementation. initiatives adhere to the principles of responsible and sustainable tourism.

“At the heart of all CTO efforts is advocacy for the sustainable and inclusive growth of Caribbean tourism towards a viable, sustainable and responsible tourism sector. This requires careful consideration of the impact of tourism on the local communities that live, work and thus support the tourism economy in many of our destinations, with equal care and attention to promoting the conservation and responsible use of our valuable but fragile natural resources, cultural values ​​and heritage. “. said Neil Walters, Acting General Secretary of the CTO, in his opening remarks at the Virtual Awards event.

He added that “The Caribbean Sustainable Tourism Awards provide a platform to recognize the efforts made by the regional tourism sector in advancing the sustainable tourism development agenda and continue to be an important part of the CTO’s efforts to honor champions of sustainable development in Caribbean tourism.. Importantly, the award aims to recognize initiatives that add value to Caribbean tourism by positioning the region as an ideal area for sustainable tourism. In this regard, we thank all 27 applicants for the 2022 Caribbean Sustainable Tourism Award. You are all winners!”

Awards Categories

The 2022 award consists of five categories:

  • Award for Excellence in Sustainable Tourism
  • Destination Stewardship and Resilience Award
  • Tourism Health and Safety Award
  • Public Tourism Award
  • Tourism Education and Training Award

The Technical Director convened a Selection Committee composed of regional and international experts representing various areas of the tourism sector, including tourism development professionals and practitioners, academics and regional consultants to evaluate applications.
