Shamrock shakes back? When McDonald’s Treat and Oreo Shamrock McFlurry are back

For some, this may be the lead up to Valentine’s Day, but there are others who are already looking at the next big day on the calendar.

No, not President’s Day or St. Patrick’s Day (although it’s related to the latter). This is the return of the iconic shamrock cocktail at McDonald’s.

The popular frozen treat made its national debut back in 1970. And the signature mint cocktail Golden Arches will return with a partner in the crime yummy again this year.

The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry comes with crushed Oreo cookies for those looking to spice up their holiday traditions a bit. The OREO twist isn’t the first time Shamrock Shake has been given a makeover. In 1980, McDonald’s introduced Shamrock Sundae ice cream.

Both will return to the US menu on February 20 (coincidentally, President’s Day) and will be available for a limited time, the fast food giant revealed.

The famous green smoothie was first created in 1967 by Hal Rosen, owner and operator of McDonald’s in Connecticut, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Three years later, Shamrock Shake debuted in stores across the country.

In 1974, sales of the popular seasonal drink helped build the very first Ronald McDonald House, which helps families with children in need of medical care.
