San Francisco International Airports (SFO) and San Jose Mineta International Airport (SJC) have been ranked among the top airports in North America for customer experience, as voted by passengers and Airports Council International.

The 2022 Airport Service Excellence Awards earned SFO the award in a category covering North American airports serving over 40 million passengers a year. Dallas-Fort Worth Airport was also recognized in this category.

SJC was the only winner in the 15 to 25 million passenger category in North America.

Other ranking leaders include Minneapolis/Saint Paul International Airport, Indianapolis International Airport, Michigan Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Grand Rapids and Fort McMurray International Airport in Alberta, Canada.

In November, the Wall Street Journal named SFO the best airport. “It’s oddly quiet here, even during rush hour,” wrote WSJ columnist Don Gilbertson of SFO.

The WSJ also named Sacramento as one of the best mid-sized airports—SJC ranked third in that category, while New York’s LaGuardia and Newark airports in New Jersey were placed squarely in the worst airport category in the paper’s rankings.

“San Francisco is a world-class destination that welcomes millions of visitors from all over the world every year, and this award is a testament to the highest quality of service and experience offered at SFO,” Mayor London Breed said. “I want to thank everyone at SFO, especially the dedicated staff, for this important achievement.”

The awards received by SFO and SJC from Airports Council International are based on real-time research from surveys conducted at the airport – directly from passengers – to assess their satisfaction on the day of travel, the SFO said in a press release.

The surveys cover more than 30 performance indicators for key elements of the passenger experience at the airport, including signage and navigation, check-in, shopping and dining. Over 465,000 surveys were collected.

“We are honored to be recognized by passengers as the best airport in North America under the ACI Airport Service Excellence Program,” said Airport Director Ivar S. Satero. “Combined with our Wall Street Journal readers’ ranking of the best airports in the United States, this latest award acknowledges the hard work our team has put into creating a world-class airport that our customers truly appreciate and deserve.”
