Senator John Cornyn talks about border, debt ceiling, Ukraine and China

The senior U.S. senator from Lone Star State has taken on what many see as a “Herculean” challenge to forge a limited bipartisan consensus as a means of alleviating the multifaceted border crisis that is plaguing Texas and the entire country.

“I think that’s why I was chosen to take on the tough challenges and see if we can find common ground,” said Senator John Cornyn. “The sad fact is that given the president’s policy of open borders and what’s happening on the border, it’s become a lot harder to find common ground, but I think it all starts with border security.”

“I met with some of our congressmen from Texas and asked them to please send us the border security bill as soon as they can, and then we can start looking here in the Senate for a bipartisan consensus to get 60 votes. which, in practical terms, is the only way we can get anything through the Senate and then hopefully to the President,” he continued. “I agree, it’s not an easy task, but it all starts with securing the borders.”

Cornyn insists that the cost of continuing Congressional inaction and stalemate will be painful.

“The border is more complicated than I think many people admit because there are a certain number of people who come to the border, economic migrants and things like that, and there are people who ask for asylum, and in fact this is our asylum system along with the policy a “catch and release” administration that continues to encourage more and more people to come,” Kornin said. “Despite the fact that those who end up appearing before an immigration judge only qualify about ten percent. The problem is that many of the rest just melt into the great American landscape.”

“I think if we could start by repairing the broken shelter system, that would be a good start,” he continued. “We’re seeing the drugs that killed 108,000 Americans cross this border, and I suspect many of these so-called ‘fugitives’ are drug traffickers bringing drugs into the interior of the United States.”

As for the looming battle over the debt ceiling, Cornyn says the $31 trillion in red ink already weighing down our government’s ledgers should prompt a nationwide call for fiscal restraint.

“As a result of COVID, we saw a huge bipartisan increase in federal spending, of course it was a public health emergency and an economic emergency, and we responded accordingly,” Kornin said. “But over the past two years, the administration and Democrats in the Senate and House of Representatives have spent another $3 trillion, so the president’s position that he won’t negotiate is simply untenable and irresponsible.”

In terms of aid to Ukraine, Kornin fully supports the provision of modern American weaponry, including the M1 Abrams battle tank.

“We must continue to help them because Mr. Putin is not going to stop,” Kornin said. “If there was a pause in the fighting or there was a temporary peace, he would use that to reload and resupply his ammunition and continue his march through Europe.”

MORE STORIES ABOUT TEXAS POLITICS

Regarding the economic and geopolitical threat posed by China, Cornyn calls on the nation to escalate preventive measures as a security imperative.

“We need to win the next war by preventing the next war, and the only way to do this is deterrence and strength, as Ronald Reagan said, “peace through strength,” and, frankly, we are not ready,” he concluded.
