Seminole State College Hosts Events to Prepare High School Students for the Next Step in Education

SEMINOL COUNTY, Florida. – Seminole State College in Florida and Seminole County Public Schools have joined forces to provide 700 high school students with the tools to help them take the next step in their education.

Students from across the district attended Decision Day earlier in February.

“When high school students come here, we tell them that the Seminole state is for everyone,” said Laurie Coachman, the college’s interim vice president of admissions and enrollment. “And when they can connect with an educational institution through an immersive experience like Decision Day, they can see themselves as not only students, but also scientists.”

The coachman added that there are no stupid questions, only possibilities.

“So ask every question that comes to mind,” she said. “In fact, I encourage you to ask the same question in three different ways, just to make sure you understand.”

Marsha McBride, Lead Counselor at Winter Springs High School, is passionate about helping students find what’s right for them, whether it’s a professional, trade, two-year, or four-year degree, and educate them about options in their backyard.

“As consultants, we are committed to bringing our students, our seniors here every year so they can find these opportunities,” McBride said. “I’m a student at Seminole State College. So are my husband, my daughter and my son.”

Students attending Decision Day met with current Seminole State students such as Vanya Allen, a freshman in computer engineering.

“I was looking for something affordable to at least get started and fit into student life,” Allen said. “It just opens your eyes to a lot of things you may not understand about yourself. You have everything you need to be a leader. Secondly, you have everything you need to become a college student. And thirdly, you have everything you need to expand your horizons to become a better person.”

Students also learned about post-Seminole opportunities and had the opportunity to meet with the University of Florida’s online admissions office.

“It pretty much earns your first 60 credits here and (it) sort of prepares you for the university level. I myself went down this path as an unconventional student. I had two jobs, I went and got my AA, saved up some money and then went to an online program,” said Jesse Olivo.

If you missed Decision Day and would like to visit Seminole State College, juniors, high school students, and their families are invited to Seminole State at night.

The event will take place on the Sanford/Lake Mary campus from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 1st. Guests will learn about the school’s 200 degrees, certifications, and programs.
