HISD Superintendent Millard House II:

“I stepped into my role by understanding the obstacles we face as a county, including the impending TEA intervention. My team and I have remained focused on building a framework that prioritizes high quality educational experiences backed by world class talent for all students.

“I am proud that over the past 19 months we have already seen significant improvements. Through the hard work of our students, teachers, and staff, we have moved 40 out of 50 schools out of the D or F TEA accountability rankings. Together with our parents, community members, and leaders, we developed the District’s first comprehensive five-year strategic plan to create a better HISD.

“Today’s announcement does not discount the progress we have made in the county. I am confident that our faculty and staff will continue to do the necessary work to ensure positive student outcomes at all levels. For our students and their families, this is a regular study, and the school year continues as usual. As we conclude this school year, I will focus on working with our Board of Trustees and TEA to ensure a smooth transition without compromising our core mission of providing an exceptional educational experience for all students.”

TEA at HISD:

Texas State Senator Paul Betancourt:

“At best, I oversaw the underperforming HISD Board of Trustees for eight years as the second longest serving member of the Senate Education Committee. TEA’s highly critical report on the trustees’ nefarious activities and the subsequent FBI investigation with multiple indictments that led to a plea deal with a former HISD trustee worried me greatly. Therefore, I strongly support Commissioner Mike Morath’s decision to create a HISD Board of Directors. As the principal author of SB 1365, which re-established the AF accountability system in the 87th legislative session, the commissioner could close Whitley High School or create a board of governors. Commissioner Morath made the right decision in deciding to create a board of governors for future students, families and HISD staff.”

Orlando Sanchez, founder of the Texas Hispanic Conservatives:

“I am very pleased that the state has made this decision. It’s time to get the HISD business back into educating our kids. We have excellent schools, historical schools. We have wonderful teachers and wonderful parents. What we need is a great board that will do its job and run the county with integrity and transparency while keeping our future, the children of Houston, number one priority.”
