Second arrest in murder case of Manhattan woman found gagged in her bedroom

A 53-year-old man from Brooklyn is the second accused of murder and other crimes in the gruesome death of a 74-year-old Manhattan woman whose own sister found her bound and gagged on the floor of her Upper West Side apartment. week, authorities said on Wednesday.

Terrence Moore of Dean Street was arrested on one count of murder and two counts of burglary a day ago in connection with the January 18 murder of Maria Hernandez. The first arrest of another Brooklyn resident, 47-year-old Lashawn McKee of Bergen Street, came just days after Hernandez’s sister, Maria Terrero, found her in the building on West 83rd Street where the two lived.

Information from the lawyers for the two defendants was not immediately clear, and it was not immediately clear who the police believed had actually killed Hernandez. Police said on Wednesday Moore was in the apartment at the time of the murder and contributed to her “demise.”

Hernandez’s apartment was also searched. Investigators are still figuring out what was in the apartment, so it remains unclear what exactly was stolen. Any possible motives in the case, as well as details of what preceded the murder, as well as the suspects’ links to the victim, are also still under investigation.

Authorities had previously said McKee may have been working in the building.

Terrero, who lived there, went upstairs to check on his sister after Hernandez’s daughter called and said she hadn’t heard from her mother. She described meeting her sister as “the worst moment of my life”.

“I find her in the bedroom on the floor, her body is covered with all this, I can hardly see her. It’s terrible, it’s traumatic, it’s unbelievable,” Terrero said afterwards.

Police officials confirmed that Hernandez was lying face down on the bedroom floor with her clothes piled on top of her. The results of the autopsy have not yet been released.
