Scott Viner has taken a big step towards running for the congressional seat currently held by former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi as the state senator from San Francisco has formed an exploratory committee.

“Emerita Pelosi, speaker, is one of the most effective and transformational leaders we’ve ever had,” Viner said in a statement to The Standard. “I will continue to be grateful that she will be my representative in Congress for as long as she is ready to serve.”

He added: “I am exploring my options for a potential run for Congress in the event that she decides to step down. I am honored to serve our community as a state senator, and I look forward to continuing to work day and night for the benefit of the people of San Francisco.”

After the November election, Pelosi announced that she would step down from her leadership position, but intends to remain in Congress after the Republicans take control of the House of Representatives. She has yet to announce whether she will run for another term after 2024.

Viner is considered one of several likely contenders to replace Pelosi if she retires. Other contenders weighing their chances of winning include Pelosi’s daughter, Kristin, who has served as a spokesperson for the Democratic Party. Jane Kim, former leader and current director of the progressive Working Families Party, is also considering running if Pelosi leaves Congress.

Primaries for Pelosi’s seat in Congress will take place next March, and any candidates will have to formally announce it by December of this year.
