Schools in Cloverdale cancel classes due to storm

On Friday, classes were canceled at all schools in the Cloverdale Unified School District due to winter weather in the area, Sonoma County school officials said.

The area is the only one in the county that has been confirmed closed as a result of a storm that brought snow, ice and strong winds to the region.

“There is a snowy day for children, it doesn’t get better than this,” said Bob Powers from Sevastopol.

Powers took his grandson Jack to the park after his brother started sending him pictures of the storm.

“He said, ‘There is snow, we have a snowman, come and play,’ so we grabbed the dog and he and I decided that we were going to come and play in the snow,” Sevastopol said.

At night, the wine country town looked more like Truckee.

“It hasn’t snowed here in years, as if it’s always been cold here,” said Hugo Orosco, who lives in Cloverdale.

In the morning, a storm briefly deprived him of strength and heat, but this did not weaken his snowy spirit.

“You usually have to pay to play in the snow, go to Lake Tahoe or whatever, so it’s worth taking the day off and playing in the snow a little,” Orozco said.

Not everywhere was covered with snow, but even more heterogeneous places attracted lugers.

One of the neighbors shared a video of fresh snow at a higher altitude.

“I had real snow, it was like a holiday greeting from Cloverdale, it was great,” said Nina Hunchett of the Cloverdale Chamber of Commerce.

Hunchett said their phones have been ringing all day.

“When we were driving here, I saw cars passing by, they had several inches of snow on them, and I thought, “Oh my God,” said Jessica Dickerson of Santa Rosa.

Highway 128 had to be closed for part of the day due to storm damage and drivers were warned to watch out for slippery streets. But for most, Friday was associated with the joy that playing in the snow brings.

Any other storm-related Sonoma County school closures will be listed by the County Board of Education.
