Sayreville council member shot dead outside his home

Authorities said 30-year-old Sayreville, New Jersey City Council member Eunice Dumfour was shot and killed outside her home in Parlin.

At around 7:22 p.m., they received a call to 911 to report gunshots in the Samuel Circle area, which is inside the Camelot at La Mer residential complex, authorities said.

When the police arrived, they said they found Dumfur in the front seat of her car. She received multiple gunshot wounds and died at the scene.

Residents of the apartment building where Dumfur lived on the third floor believe that the shooting was targeted.

They said she was on her way home from work and was about to park her SUV when, out of nowhere, someone came out and opened fire, shooting her 13 times through the truck window.

They said she then lost control of her SUV, continued to roll down the hill and crashed into a parked Mercedes-Benz.

Authorities said the murder was under investigation. No arrests were made.

Eunice Dumfour

Dumfur, a Republican, was elected to the seat in November 2021. She graduated from Newark Public Schools and then received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Women’s and Gender Studies from William Paterson University.

Dumfur has also been a part-time EMT business analyst and church director.

In a tweet, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy wrote, “I am stunned by the news of the shooting death of Sayreville councilor Eunice Dumfour last night. My condolences go out to her family and friends, and to the entire Sayreville community. I urge anyone with information to contact local Seyreville law enforcement.”

Senator Cory Booker issued a statement saying, “The tragic killing of Sayreville councilor Eunice Dumfour in a shootout last night is shocking and horrifying. Her death is a terrible loss not only to her family, friends and colleagues, but to the Sayreville community and our state. My heart goes out to her loved ones and the entire Sayreville community during these difficult times.”
