Sayerville council member shot dead outside his home

SIERVILLE, NJ (MIDDLESEX) – Middlesex County Attorney Yolanda Ciccone and Sayreville Police Department Chief Daniel Plummaker announced today that a homicide investigation is underway.

Today, February 1, 2023 at approximately 7:22 p.m., authorities received an emergency call reporting gunshots in the Samuel Circle neighborhood of Parlin in Sayreville, New Jersey. The Sayreville Police Department responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found City Council member Eunice Dwumfour, 30, from Seyreville, in her car, suffering multiple gunshot wounds. Dumfur succumbed to her injuries and was announced at the scene.

This is an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with information or security footage is asked to call Detective Rebecca Morales of the Sayreville Police Department at 732-727-4444 or Detective Michelle Coppola of the Middlesex County Attorney’s Office at 732-745-3477.


US Senator Cory Booker (DN.J.) issued the following statement:

“The tragic killing of Sayreville council member Eunice Dumfour last night in a gunfight is shocking and horrifying. Her death is a terrible loss not only to her family, friends and colleagues, but to the Sayreville community and our state. My heart goes out to her loved ones and the entire Sayreville community during these difficult times.”

“I am stunned by the news of the murder of Sayreville Councilman Eunice Dumfour last night in an act of gun violence. Her career in public service was just beginning, and by all accounts, she had already earned a reputation as a dedicated city council member who assumed responsibility with the greatest diligence and seriousness. My condolences go out to the family and friends of council member Dumfur, her colleagues in the governing body, and the entire Sayreville community. Sayreville is a proud, close-knit, and safe community, and I know they will, as always, come together to achieve a common goal. The New Jersey State Police are supporting the ongoing investigation and I urge anyone with information to contact either the Sayreville Police or the Middlesex County Attorney’s Office.”
