Santa Rosa students strike to raise safety concerns after fatal stabbing

Hundreds of students in Santa Rosa walked out of class on Friday to voice safety concerns.

The demonstration comes days after a 16-year-old student was fatally shot at Montgomery High School and the student smuggled a gun into another campus.

“We need change. We cannot allow students to die at school because of this kind of violence,” student Hayes Baxter said. “It’s not clear how we students feel, parents too.”

On Wednesday, a fight and stabbing broke out in a classroom at Montgomery High School that left 16-year-old Jaden Pienta dead and another student injured.

Police also this week responded to Maria Carillo High School’s reports of a student armed with a gun. The student was arrested, and an abandoned pistol was found nearby.

“Now it’s scary to go to school,” said student Maggie Barber.

Detectives Thursday were investigating what sparked a fight between three students at a high school in the Santa Rosa area that ended with one fatally injuring the other in front of more than two dozen classmates. Tom Jensen reports.

Students said they felt the school district was not informing them or doing enough to keep them safe. Some students would like to see School Resource Staff return after the district voted to end the program three years ago.

“I would like the officer on campus to just reassure us that we are safe,” student Sophia Heller said.

Parents also marched in solidarity with the students.

“We all support our children and just want the best for them,” parent Courtney Hurwitz said. “And we want the local school board to make the right decision.”

NBC Bay Area contacted the school district on Friday but received no response.

Santa Rosa police and Santa Rosa School District officials are providing an update on a fight that left one student dead and another injured on Wednesday.
