SANDAG Chairman Nora Vargas misleads San Diego by calling the mileage tax a “road user levy.”

SAN DIEGO (CUSI) — As we all know, SANDAG executives have adopted a $163 billion regional transportation plan with the promise of removing a hugely unpopular mileage tax from the plan.

They had six months to come up with an alternative funding mechanism, but almost a year went by and they were unable to do so.

There is no other way to fund a massive transportation plan, and unelected SANDAG CEO Hassan Ihrata continues to publicly support taxing people for every mile they walk to bring the regional transportation plan to life.

Democrats on the SANDAG council, such as Chairman Nora Vargas, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria, and Chief Executive Nathan Fletcher, have refused to publicly oppose the proposed mileage tax because they privately support it.

The tax will obviously hurt low-income San Diegan residents the most, but Democrats who support it don’t seem to be concerned because they believe the end justifies the means.

The goal of SANDAG is to change people’s behavior by forcing them to give up their personal cars and switch to public transport.

Republican Supervisor Jim Desmond recently approached Elon Musk for help creating a new transportation plan for the county, to which Musk replied “of course,” and Desmond quickly met with Boring Company executives to begin the process.

It was then that the new chairman of SANDAG, Democrat Sup. Nora Vargas, went to Twitter directly and publicly mislead the public.

Tuesday, Vargas named KUSI coating mileage tax dispute, “misinformation”.

But a closer look at Vargas’ choice of words tells a different story. In an attempt to convince the public that CUSI is “disinformation,” Vargas stated that “no government. The agency has the right to impose a tax that will affect our region without voter approval.” This statement is correct.

But in the same tweetVargas was careful to call what we know as the proposed mileage tax “tolls to use the roads.”

Voters do not need to approve the “fee” that finances transportation systems.

Vargas deliberately misleads the people of San Diego.

SANDAG’s own document proves Vargas is lying. Under “Regional Road User Charges”, the document states “Implementation actions that consist of applying legislation or other mechanism to administer Regional Road User Charges”.

SANDAG board member and Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey called out Vargas’ misleading tweet by commenting on KUSI’s Instagram post, writing, “Please note this is called a ‘collection’ and not a ‘tax.’ While no official decisions have been made, while the tax currently requires voter approval, the levy/fee does not. Thus, the “fee” that finances the transportation system does not necessarily require voter approval. Another minor detail that needs to be sorted out.”

KUSI invited Supervisor Vargas to respond to her misleading tweet, but we received no response.
