San Ramon Valley schools discuss possible ban on book depicting images of LGBT identity

The topic of the book ban was brought up at a meeting of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District Board of Education on Tuesday.

Parents, teachers and students voiced their opinion on whether a book that explores and portrays images of LGBTQ identity and sexuality should be removed from libraries.

“When I saw the Gender Queer graphic novel, I was stunned that it featured some of the images that I consider pornographic,” said Lacey Lowe, an instructor at the San Ramon Valley Unified School District. “I shared the photos with other teachers at my school and they were stunned too.”

Many students said that Gender Queer: A Memoir, which is an illustrated memoir, made them feel seen and appreciated.

“As a gay student, I am frankly terrified at the prospect of our community starting to censor LGBTQIA+ writers,” said Billy, a sophomore at California High School.

According to the district, there are only three copies of the book in the district at three of the four high schools, with the exception of Monte Vista. At San Ramon Valley High School, “Gender Queer” has only been tested twice since it hit shelves in October 2020.

If a parent or community member wants a book removed, they need to follow a three-step process, starting with a meeting with the principal. If they choose, they can go all the way to the Board of Education for a final decision.

After the information meeting on Tuesday, parents and other stakeholders in the district should decide whether to file their complaints with the principal, and then, if they are not satisfied after that, file a formal complaint with the superintendent.
