San Marcos wildfire prompts evacuation as Oak Grove blaze engulfs

Crews are currently engaged in battling the Oak Grove Fire in San Marcos, according to the Hays County Office of Emergency Management. Previously identified as the Fox Fire, this ongoing wildfire has already engulfed an estimated 300 acres of land. As of 9 p.m. on August 5, the containment rate stands at a moderate 10%.

The incident occurred in the 200 block of Oak Grove Road, prompting the timely response of emergency personnel at around 3 p.m. In a surprising turn of events, the fire has now managed to leap across the Blanco River and continues to ravage the north side of the area. To address the escalating crisis, the Hays County Wildland Task Force has joined the efforts, along with the deployment of air assets.

Providing a glimmer of hope, the Texas A&M Forest Service has reported that the fire’s forward progression has ceased. This achievement has been facilitated by the relentless work of dozers along the right flank, while hand crews tirelessly combat the fire from the left flank. However, the situation remains precarious, as engine crews remain fully engaged in protecting the structures affected.

In light of the imminent danger, officials have issued evacuation orders for some homes situated in a rural neighborhood west of Kyle. As a precautionary measure, residents have been advised to seek refuge at the Promised Land Church, located at 1650 Lime Kiln Road in San Marcos. The church has graciously opened its doors to provide temporary shelter to those displaced by the wildfire.
