San Francisco leaders held city hall meeting after deadly house fire and explosion

On Wednesday night, only standing room was going to San Francisco’s Sunset District as it was reserved exclusively for those whose homes were damaged in last week’s explosion on 22nd Avenue between Moraga and Noriega.

The meeting was closed to everyone else, including the media.

“And I’ve gathered all the heads of relevant departments to talk directly to the residents and we’ll get in touch with them,” said San Francisco Supervisor Joel Engardio.

The leaders of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, firefighters and police addressed the audience.

“We need security here right now. There are too many cars passing by and too many people watching, and we are also worried about our property,” said San Francisco resident Jack Noriega.

Residents who live next door to the house that exploded said they rented an apartment and lost 90% of everything they had. They have since moved in with friends, attended a meeting, and left with a very positive attitude.

“We learned how to get around bureaucratic red tape and get direct support from department heads,” said San Francisco-based David Garth.

Earlier Wednesday, NBC Bay Area learned that the woman who died in the house bombing was 51-year-old Rita Price. Her teacher was seriously injured, her children were at school that day.

Also in court for Darron Price’s arraignment, the man neighbors said was Rita Price’s husband. He is charged with multiple felonies, including manslaughter, endangering children, and producing a controlled substance, allegedly producing hash oil, when the ingredients caught fire.

The judge allowed cameras in court but did not allow the media to show the face of the defendant. San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said she would insist that Darron Price remain behind bars during his trial.

“We want to make sure the community understands that we take this case very seriously. We had one life loss, we could have had more than one life loss,” she said.

The trial of Darron Price has been rescheduled for Friday.
