San Francisco Beer Week kicks off with at least 5 parties next month

Nearly 60 years after Fritz Meitag bought the declining Anchor Brewing Company and effectively revitalized the American industry with the Potrero Hill brewery, craft beer has become an integral part of American food and nightlife culture. Recognizing this history, showcasing all that is exciting and unexplored in the world of craft beer, SF Beer Week returns next month with no less than five launch events, one for each chapter of the Bay Area Brewers Guild.

The name is a little misleading: SF Beer Week is not just a week and not only in San Francisco. (How can that be if Santa Rosa and San Leandro are beer capitals in their own right?) The Bay Area’s ten-day craft brewing celebration includes parties at well-established ventures like 21st Amendment and through sponsors like Drake’s, Henhouse and Barebottle.

Are you craving to revisit the limited edition Pliny the Younger, a perennial cult favorite of Russian River Brewing and the perfectly balanced pine and citrus triple IPA that people have been known to wait for six hours? There are IPA-focused events left and right, including Triple IPA Day in Redwood City and the 23rd Double IPA Festival in Hayward. Pairings abound, from choppinos to Girl Scout biscuits and an unforgettable dim sum brunch at Fort Point.

After years of near-constant growth, the local scene has undergone profound changes. For its part, Fort Point rolled out a full seafood menu at two of its San Francisco restaurants last summer, and it’s now moving into the cider line. New Belgium has been in business for a couple of years now, with Brix Factory opening next spring in West Auckland. But Seven Stills closed its giant Mission Bay facility after expanding too quickly, and Local Brewing was hit by a massive fire in December.

However, San Diego’s Ballast Point, best known for its always-session and grapefruit Sculpin IPAs, will finally open its tavern near the Chase Center after a long delay, securing the area as San Francisco’s craft beer headquarters.

Quite insightfully, SF Beer Week covers more than a couple of holidays. First, he has a three-day weekend for those who have a day off on President’s Day. But there’s also Valentine’s Day, which is no longer just for champagne toast, but for the Super Bowl. The Buffalo Bills were once the winning team, and football commercials were full of tedious debates between “taste great” and “less satisfying.” The craft beer renaissance has really come a long way.
