San Diego’s Pizzeria named to Yelp’s Top 100 Pizza Places

A relatively new pizza restaurant in San Diego was named one of the top 100 pizzerias in the US and Canada by Yelp.

Online crowdsourced review aggregator Yelp today released a list of the top 100 pizza places in the US and Canada, which included only one restaurant in San Diego. Cucina Caprese, which replaced Devine Pastabilities in San Diego’s Midway County Point Loma last fall, was ranked #88 on Yelp’s list of best pizzas. The restaurant currently holds a perfect five stars on Yelp with over 250 reviews.

“We scoured the US and Canada to find the best places to eat a slice, whether you prefer a thin crust or deep fried dish, red or white sauce, dozens of toppings, or just sprinkled with cheese,” reads the post. Yelp’s post about his best pizza list. “Some pizzerias, like Sapori Di 786 Degrees, which won #1 in Pasadena, California, are popular for baking their pies in a wood-fired oven imported from Italy. Others, such as Toni’s Detroit Style Pizza in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina (#9), pay homage to the square blue steel pans that historically stored motor city car parts before they became the medium for making crispy pizza.” .

Owned by Derya Ozbey, Cucina Caprese, with a menu curated by Italian-born chef Giuseppe Monaco, has been a staple of local farmers markets and local pop-ups for nearly a decade. Last year, the company signed a lease on the space that has long housed Devine Pastabilities (Torpasta) at the Nordic Village mall in Point Loma’s Midway neighborhood. Cucina Caprese offers a long menu based on traditional Neapolitan pizza made with seasonal, local and organic ingredients, San Marzano tomatoes, meats, cheeses and extra virgin olive oil imported from Italy. The restaurant also serves other Italian dishes, appetizers, salads, pasta, first courses and desserts, as well as a carefully selected wine list and beer selection.
