San Diego’s much loved I Love Poke Festival is returning to the bayfront Bali Hai restaurant for its 12th year, on Tuesday, May 23rd from 6-9pm. The event is all set to celebrate the colorful Hawaiian culture and cuisine, with a wide range of poke dishes from a remarkable lineup of restaurants, along with exciting island-inspired tastes, music, and much more.
Traditionally, poke is a Hawaiian delicacy prepared with raw ahi bluefin tuna, cut into cubes, and seasoned with a variety of ingredients such as seaweed, onions, and soy sauce. The word Poke, pronounced ‘po-kay’, translates to ‘slice’ or ‘cut’ in Hawaiian. More than a dozen of San Diego’s top chefs and restaurants will be competing at this year’s I Love Poke Festival to see who prepares the most delicious poke dish in the city.
The I Love Poke Festival includes two sections- Pokeland and Foodland. Pokeland features 12-15 chefs contesting for the “Best Poke” crown, with guest judges crowning the Poke champion, and live music for the entertainment of the guests at the Bali Hai restaurant’s outdoor, waterfront setting. Foodland is the area where attendees can sample delicious Hawaiian and Asian inspired food from more than 15 restaurants. Expect rare and delicious dishes from San Diego’s top chefs and restaurants at Pokeland.
This year has an incredible lineup of competition participants, including Bali Hai Restaurant, Herb & Sea, Chef Billy Butters, Lime in the Coconut, Blue Water Seafood, Kairoa Brewing Co., Guahan Grill, Sushi on a Roll, Serbesa, Island Mike’s Poke, Sushi Me Rollin, Rolled Up SD, and more. Apart from that, at least 15 San Diego restaurants provide sweet and savory bites inspired by the tropics, including Tom Ham’s Lighthouse, Serbesa, Lia’s Lumpia, Da Kines, All Things UBE, Hoonanicakes, Hodad’s, Kaiju Pizza, Bali Hai Restaurant, with more to be announced soon.
