San Diego Bay & Airport-Adjacent TopGolf Advanced For Take Off

December 13, 2022

Nearly a decade in the making, the Topgolf driving range and entertainment venue planned for downtown San Diego’s bayfront has been unanimously advanced.

Earlier today, the Port of San Diego Commissioners voted unanimously to advance the Topgolf venue proposed for an airport adjacent site on East Harbor Island to the environmental review phase. The plans for the downtown San Diego location of call for a 68,000 square-foot, three-level indoor/outdoor building to be constructed with 102 hitting bays in addition to gaming areas, an all-day restaurant, multiple bars, event spaces, parking for 450, a public deck with prime views of downtown San Diego’s skyline, and nearly 300 parking spots. Topgolf will also contribute toward the public infrastructure around the site such as parks and promenades. The company has been trying to negotiate a location to open a San Diego branch since 2015. The project is estimated to cost at least $50 million.

Founded outside London in 2000 by brothers Steve and Dave Jolliffe, Topgolf is a redesigned driving range that uses microchip technology inside golf balls to make driving balls its own unique game. The company was acquired by Carlsbad’s Callaway Golf Company in March 2021 and currently operates over 80 locations, most of which also house an event space, restaurants, bars, and multiple entertainment rooms.

In addition to a the facility planned for San Diego’s bayfront in the 8.5-acre site where the rental car companies were sited before relocating to their new headquarters, Topgolf Callaway Brands has plans for a second area outpost to open in Sorrento Valley. Current plans for Topgolf in Sorrento Valley are focused on Topgolf redeveloping the Carroll Canyon Golf Center, replacing it with a three-level venue equipped with the company’s latest technology throughout its 80+ bays. Topgolf announced the second San Diego location by posting two memes featuring Ron Burgundy from the San Diego-based Anchorman movie.

The environmental review, a condition of the California Environmental Quality Act, could take up to two years to complete. The earliest construction could begin would be 2025 but would likely be later. In addition to environmental review, the timeline is dependent on various Board approvals, real estate negotiations, drafting and issuing a Coastal Development Permit, construction schedule, and more.
