SAG Awards: Dominated by “Everything Everywhere”

The incredible power of the All Around All At Once awards season took place at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday and even garnered a flood of awards not only for Best Ensemble, Michelle Yeoh and Ke Hai Kuan, but also for Jamie Lee Curtis.

Often a preview of the Oscars, the SAG Awards made some changes to the Oscar race at the ceremony, which was streamed live on the Netflix YouTube page from Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. Curtis won Best Supporting Actress for her performance in All Around All At Once over favorite Angela Bassett. Brendan Fraser won Best Male Character for The Whale.

Bassett, who is expected to be the first actor to win an Oscar for a Marvel movie (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever After), has been the clear leader in the category for weeks, if not months. But Curtis, nominated for her first SAG award, was the surprise winner of Sunday’s ceremony. A visibly flustered Curtis said she was wearing an engagement ring that her father, Tony Curtis, had given to her mother, Janet Leigh.

“I know that you look at me and think: “Nepomniachtchi, baby,” said Curtis. “But the truth is, I’m 64 and it’s amazing.”

In the week leading up to the SAG Awards, the favorite for Best Picture won both producers and directors’ guilds two of the most predictable awards before the Oscars. At SAG, Yeoh won Best Actress.

“It’s not just for me,” Yeoh said. “This is for every little girl like me.”

Kuan, a former child star, won Best Supporting Actor. He left acting for years after auditions ended and noted that he was the first Asian to win Best Supporting Actor at the SAG Awards.

“When I retired from the game, it was because there were so few opportunities,” Quan said. “Now tonight we honor James Hong, Michelle Yeoh, Stephanie Hsu, Hong Chau, Harry Sham Jr. The landscape looks very different now.”

Sunday’s SAG Awards shed some light on the lead role awards. The best actor was one of the most difficult to name. Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Brendan Fraser (“The Whale”) and Colin Farrell (“The Banshee of Inisherina”) were considered as possible winners, but it was Fraser who came home with a SAG award for his comeback.

“Trust me, if you just stay there and put one foot behind the other, you will get to where you need to be,” Frazier said.

Quinta Brunson and Janelle James of Elementary Abbott kicked off the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards with a few opening jokes, including one stating that recent Grammy winner Viola Davis had transcended her EGOT status and became the “SHOT of all of them.” “.

Brunson later returned to the stage with the cast of “Ebbott Elementary” to receive the SAG Award for Outstanding Ensemble in a Comedy Series. Brunson, the sitcom’s creator and one of its producers, said of her co-stars, “These people bring me back to Earth.”

“White Lotus” also took the win, winning Outstanding Ensemble in a Drama Series and another win for Jennifer Coolidge, courtesy of her Emmy and Golden Globe wins. Coolidge tearfully traced her love of acting to a first grader’s trip to see a Charlie Chaplin movie. She then thanked her friend, longtime friend, actor Tim Bagley.

“Today you have a wonderful date,” said Coolidge. “I can’t wait until we get home.”

The first award of the ceremony went to last year’s winner: Jessica Chastain. A year after winning Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Chastain won Best Actress in a TV Movie or Miniseries for the Showtime country music series George & Tammy. Chastain flew in with a preview of the upcoming Broadway revival of A Doll’s House.

After the SAG Awards, presented by the film and television actors guild SAG-AFRTA, lost its broadcast on TNT/TBS, Netflix signed up to stream the ceremony.

Sunday’s live broadcast meant a slightly reduced atmosphere. No winners were drawn without a broadcast time limit. The regal and unflappable Sam Elliott, winner of Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for 1883, spoke far beyond his allotted time. But the show has accelerated early winners, including awards for Jean Smart (“Hacks”), Jeremy Allen White (“Bear”) and Jason Bateman (“Ozark”).

Another effect of streaming: no audio signal.

“Everything, Everywhere, All At Once” and “Inisherin’s Banshee” took first place in five categories. Each film is up for the Guild’s highest award for Best Ensemble, along with Babylon, The Fabelmans, and The Talking Women.

Ahead of the show, one award was announced from the red carpet: Top Gun: Maverick won Best Stunt Ensemble.

The SAG Awards are considered one of the most trusted Oscar leaders. Actors make up the largest percentage of the film academy, so their choice has the most impact. Last year, KODA won the SAG and went on to win the Best Picture Oscar, while Ariana DeBose, Will Smith, Jessica Chastain and Troy Kotzur won both the SAG and the Academy Award.
