Riverside County MP dies after shooting at Lake Elsinore two weeks after another MP was killed

Authorities said the Riverside County MP, who was taken to hospital after being shot Friday afternoon, has died.

Darnell Calhoun, 30, of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office (RSO), was killed in the line of duty and ultimately died from injuries sustained during a shootout with a suspect at Lake Elsinore, the office said.

According to FOX 11 Los Angeles, deputies responded to a call in the 18500 block of Hilldale Lane, where an insubordinate suspect began shooting at officers.

The sheriff’s office said one person was detained after the shooting.

Lake Elsinore is located south of Riverside, near San Bernardino, east of Los Angeles.

Sheriff Chad Bianco said Calhoun answered the child custody call around 4:20 p.m.

It is not immediately clear what led to the shooting.

According to Bianco, Calhoun joined the department in February 2022 after serving with the San Diego Police Department.

“There is not a single person who could say something negative about him,” Bianco said of Calhoun, reports FOX 11. “He was the nicest, healthiest person you could imagine.”

He was a husband, son and future father.

Several law enforcement agencies expressed their condolences for the loss.

NYC POLICE STAFFED, SUSPECTED SHOOTING AND KILLED

The Los Angeles Police Department called the news “tragic.”

“The LAPD extends its condolences to his friends and family. Rest in peace, Deputy Calhoun,” the department said in a statement.

“No words can express to our brothers and sisters of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department our deepest sorrow at the loss of Deputy Darnell Calhoun,” the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with you, his family and his friends. We will honor him, mourn him and support you in everything.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Calhoun’s family and his brothers and sisters from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. They are saddened by this devastating loss,” the OC fire department added.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said their hearts were “broken.”

“Our hearts are broken because of our partners @RSO. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, loved ones and associates of Deputy Calhoun,” the office said in a statement.

“We are devastated to learn of the passing of @RSO Deputy Darnell Calhoun, an SDPD officer until 2022,” Calhoun’s previous employer, the San Diego Police Department, said in a statement. “Tonight he was killed in the line of duty defending Lake Elsinore. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues at SDPD and @RSO.”

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office added: “We would like to extend our deepest condolences to our brothers and sisters @riversidecountysheriff as they experience another death in the line of duty. Our agency has authorized our deputies to immediately wear mourning bands as we express solidarity. .”

The loss comes just weeks after MP Isaiah Cordero, another Riverside County legislator, was shot and killed during a traffic stop in the Jurupa Valley on Dec. 29.

William Shay McKay, 44, the suspect who fired the shot was killed during the chase.
