‘Riverdale’ creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa registers co-op in New York

As Riverdale’s seventh and final season approaches, creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and his husband, director Barclay Steiff, have listed their Upper West Side classic Astor Court co-op for $925,000.

This is slightly less than the purchase price when Aguirre-Sacasa bought the apartment for $950,000 in 2014.

In a one-bedroom, one-bathroom home at 205 W. 89th St. has a kitchen with windows, wood floors, 10-foot ceilings, cornices and west-facing windows.

An elegant landing opens into a foyer with a large closet and bookshelves that leads into a spacious living room with recessed ceilings, art space and a large window overlooking Broadway. There is also an alcove with floor-to-ceiling built-in appliances and a desk for the home office. The smart home is equipped with in-ceiling surround speakers.

No, they are not leaving New York. The couple also own a one-bedroom apartment at the iconic Dakota Hotel, located upstairs from Yoko Ono, which they bought in May 2020 for $2.2 million. This apartment, located on the second highest floor of the building, offers views of Central Park and the city skyline from every room. Dakota Hotel at 1 W. 72nd St. was built in 1884 by architect Henry J. Hardenberg of the Plaza Hotel. It has long been known as the first luxury apartment building in the United States, as well as being the site of John Lennon’s assassination in 1980.

Towards the end of 2020, the couple made another West Coast purchase, buying an eight-bedroom, 8,346-square-foot, 100-year-old Los Angeles mansion for $8.75 million from actress Bridget Fonda and Oscar-nominated film composer Danny Elfman. “It will be a good hunt.”

Aguirre-Sacasa, a veteran playwright, was also a writer/producer on Big Love and Glee before he created the CW series Riverdale and the Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

He is also the Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics. Aguirre-Sacasa told Gimme that the listing of Astor Court “seems like a real full circle moment for me – in a good way. I wrote the pilot for Riverdale in this Astor Court apartment overlooking Broadway. The Upper West Side has always been a place of inspiration for me. It feels right to hand over this gem as Riverdale enters its final season.”

Astor Court’s listing brokers are Christopher Kromer and Nora Ariffin of Brown Harris Stevens, who also represented the couple in their Dakota purchase. The apartment renovation that the pandemic slowed down was recently completed.

Astor Court, built in 1915, was designed by architect Charles Platt for property developer Vincent Astor. It features a landscaped courtyard in an English garden, super resident, rooftop terrace, laundry, children’s playroom and bike storage.
