River Walk business group hopes to revitalize the river walk

Business owners want to attract repeat visitors and local residents.

SAN ANTONIO. A group of River Walk business owners are coming together to make the place more attractive to visitors and locals alike.

The San Antonio River Authority estimates that the River Walk attracts 11.5 million visitors annually.

“Riverwalk has always been a symbol of Texas and San Antonio tourism,” said Terry Corless, owner of restaurant group Mad Dog’s.

Corless is chairman of the newly formed River Walk business group, though he doesn’t brag about that title.

“I mean, we all have our respective positions that they gave me as chairman,” he said. “But it’s really a conglomeration of people who have made long-term investments and who are passionate about Riverwalk.”

The group was formed in the wake of the pandemic to protect owners of river walk businesses. Corless said businesses in the area had to struggle to survive.

“We came together during this crisis and became a voice,” he said. “because we had to talk about our own survival”

One of the problems with the River Walk business group is that visitors come to River Walk over and over again only to get the same experience. This is the pattern they hope to break.

“Everyone who comes to San Antonio and sees the climate, hears the jazz that plays in On the Bend… it’s a special, relaxing and fun atmosphere. But we can add a lot more to it,” Corless said.

With the worst of the pandemic behind them, the group will focus on guiding River Walk into the future, Corless said. He said the group hopes to start developing its own strategic plan, similar to the one developed by the airport.

“We started, we realized the need, we formed a team, we created an organization,” he said. “Now we really get to work.”
