Eunice Semple was the first winner of the $173 million Extravaganza top prize, meaning two top prizes remain unclaimed.

CHESPICK, Virginia. A Chesapeake woman walked into a 7-Eleven store and bought a $173 million ticket to the extravaganza. She came out with a $5 million win.

Eunice Sample, a retired teacher, was the first grand prize winner in a $173 million extravaganza, meaning two grand prizes remain unclaimed.

The game has prizes ranging from $30 to $5 million. According to the Virginia Lottery, the odds of winning the top prize are 1 in 2,529,600, and the odds of winning any prize in this game are 1 in 3.08.

Sample purchased a ticket from a 7-Eleven store at 907 Great Bridge Boulevard, who would receive a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery for selling the winning ticket.

“I was so stunned, I don’t know what I did,” she told Virginia Lottery officials.

Sample had two cash options: the full prize of $5 million over 30 years, or a one-time cash option of $3,125,000 before taxes. She chose the latter.

All profits from the lottery go to Virginia’s K-12 education. In fiscal year 2022, the lottery raised over $779 million, about 10 percent of the total Virginia K-12 school budget.
