Rescuers say several cats found horribly injured in New York may have been tortured

In the same area of Queens, stray cats are showing up with horrific and life-threatening injuries, and rescuers say the felines may have been tortured.

One of the tiny stray cats is commonly found on 102nd Avenue in Richmond Hill. At the end of February, local rescuers noticed how the animal’s paw was trembling and bleeding on the sidewalk at night.

Upon closer examination, it turned out that all four paws had serious injuries – some of them were so serious that the bones were completely exposed.

“We thought maybe she was stuck in something, maybe it looked like a severe injury. We just took her to the hospital where she is still in,” said Megan Likari of Puppy Kitty NYC.

But then everything became even more disturbing and mysterious. Two more cats were found with identical injuries – a huge red flag indicating that the injuries were not accidental. The images of the injuries were so graphic that News 4 decided to blur them out.

“Oh my God, what have they been through? How did it happen? Their pain, because you could see it on their faces… and they are shaking. It was terrible,” Likari said. “It’s too much of a coincidence that they would all have the same injury.”

Licari said she contacted the police and contacted the detective. No leads so far, but the cat’s veterinarian believes they suffered chemical burns.

“I’m worried about abuse. I don’t know if this is directed at cats directly or if someone is throwing chemicals to scare away all the animals,” Likari said.

All three cats were taken to Long Island Veterinary Specialty Hospital with paws bandaged. But Licari said that the second cat they found, Ruby, could not be saved. The body of the animal was sent to the laboratory for further research.

“My veterinarian said the only way she would be ok was to have all four limbs amputated, which is not really a quality of life for a four-legged animal,” she said.

The Likari group fight to save the others, but the bills are piling up. The hospital bill for one of the rescued cats is already $7,000.

“I agreed to take these cats and save their lives, and I will do everything in my power. They deserved this chance after what they had to go through,” said Likari.

She fears that they will never know who did it or why.
