Republican George Santos wins, flipping Tom Suozzi’s NY-3 House seat

Republican George Santos defeated Democrat Robert Zimmerman to flip retiring Rep. Tom Suozzi’s Long Island house seat red.

The Associated Press called the race for Santos just after 1:30 am with the Republican holding a 54.2% to 45.8% lead and 90% of the votes counted.

Santos, a 34-year-old finance executive who lost to Suozzi two years ago, ran for the NY-3 congressional district seat on a conservative platform of cutting taxes, demanding border security and railing against the Democrats’ unpopular state cashless bail law.

Suozzi decided to run for governor instead of seeking re-election to the House, finishing a distant third in the Democratic primary behind sitting Gov. Kathy Hochul and city Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

It’s the first time that two openly gay candidates faced off in a congressional race.

The district runs along Long Island’s north shore and takes in the Queens communities of Whitestone, Bay Terrace, Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck, Glen Oaks, Queens Village as well as parts of Nassau and Suffolk.

In a sign of the importance of the seat to Democrats, First Lady Jill Biden stumped in the district with Zimmerman when early voting started.

Santos accused Zimmeran, a public relations executive and Democratic National Committee member, of backing Democratic lawmakers who wrote and approved the cashless bail law.

“The New York cashless bail that allows dangerous criminals to roam our cities and streets. Criminals must be held accountable for their actions. Democrats in New York and across the country are putting criminals above law-abiding citizens .

“Our community is becoming more and more dangerous at the hands of Democrat leadership.”

He called for a flat income tax, cutting marginal rates, capital gains rates and eliminating the “death tax” on inheritances.

The Republican said he supporting oil drilling on federal lands so the US becomes energy independent.

Santos said more has to be done to secure the southern border and opposed transferring thousands of migrants from New York City to his district.

“We don’t have the infrastructure. Where are we going to put them?,” Santos said during an appearance with Zimmerman on CBS News.com’s “The Point with Marcia Kramer.”
