Rep. Kathy Porter says she’s running for Feinstein’s Senate seat

California State Representative Kathy Porter, who represents Orange County in House of Representatives, is applying for the US Senate seat currently held by veteran MP Dianne Feinstein.

Porter is the first major candidate to openly apply for the position.

“California needs a warrior in the Senate to counter special interests, fight dangerous imbalances in our economy, and hold so-called leaders like Mitch McConnell accountable for rigging our democracy,” Porter said in a video message.

Feinstein, 89, has served in the US Senate since 1992. She began her political career on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming mayor after the assassination of Supervisor Harvey Milk and Mayor George Moscone.

Although Feinstein gave no indication that she would retire, media reports raised questions about the older MP’s cognitive health.

Feinstein has filed initial paperwork to run for re-election in 2024 but has yet to announce her plans.
