Red Cross shelter for storm survivors in Pasadena to remain open

PASADENA, Texas – Tornado victims who were staying at a makeshift shelter in Pasadena who thought they would have to get out by Friday are now learning they are not.

American Red Cross director of employment Melody Gaeski says there may have been a misunderstanding.

“They don’t kick us out, and we don’t kick anyone out either,” Gaeskey said, adding that the Pasadena Revival Church, which donated its space, will continue to do so for the time being.

“It all depends on how quickly we can solve the problems our customers face,” said Gaeski.

On Tuesday, some hurricane victims panicked, thinking they would be homeless by Friday.

“I believe we had people who were ready to leave, and they may have shared that they were going to leave in a couple of days,” she said. “And that was misinterpreted as it meant everyone was leaving.”

“Right now, we are focused on the families we have at the shelter and helping them prepare for their next recovery journey,” added Gaeskey.

Pasadena resident Rashunda Gipson, who has lived at the shelter since the Beamer apartment was damaged, says she is grateful.

“They were really kind to us, they helped us every step of the way,” she said.

The Houston Housing Authority recently began processing more victim applications to see if some of them are eligible for housing vouchers.

President and CEO David A. Northern Sr. issued the following statement:

“During a disaster, we must come together to take care of people. When a storm blows your home, your life changes in minutes and it can be hard for you to stand on your own two feet. We are grateful that HHA can step up and use the resources we have to help.”

It’s unclear how long it will take to process applications, but HHA officials say that even if victims are not eligible for vouchers, they will connect those in need with available resources.

The American Red Cross says they will also continue to help victims return to normal.
