Raging fire breaks out in NYC supermarket as shoppers and workers inside: FDNY

A huge fire inside a supermarket in the Bronx sent smoke into the air as the fire broke out as the store was packed with shoppers and workers.

The fire broke out at a C-Town supermarket on University Avenue in the Morris Heights neighborhood around 5:30 p.m. and quickly grew to 5 alarms, according to fire officials. The employee said the food market was busy at the time and noticed smoke coming from the top of the building near some of the cables.

Customers and workers were able to exit the store safely, and the FDNY said only one person suffered minor injuries.

Two residents of a neighboring house said they heard a loud explosion and ran out of the house.

At least 200 firefighters were at the scene trying to put out the flames, which were still burning as of 20:00. The biggest problem for firefighters quickly became preventing the fire from spreading, as the Exxon gas station was located next to a grocery store.

It was not immediately clear what could have caused the fire.
