Publix expands further: Florida’s supermarket heads to new state
Kentucky is set to welcome its first Publix supermarket in January, as the Polk County-based chain announced the opening of its store in Louisville on Jan. 10. This move marks the eighth state in the United States to have a Publix location. The supermarket giant, known for its commitment to customer satisfaction, is expected to bring its signature shopping experience to the Bluegrass State.
Publix has a rich history dating back to its first food store opening in Winter Haven, Florida, on Sept. 6, 1930. The company introduced its first supermarket, a magnificent “food palace” adorned with marble, glass, and stucco, on Nov. 8, 1940. This innovative store featured cutting-edge amenities like air conditioning, fluorescent lighting, electric eye doors, and terrazzo floors. Since then, Publix has expanded its reach to several states. Georgia became home to the first Publix in 1991, followed by South Carolina in 1993, Alabama in 1996, Tennessee in 2002, North Carolina in 2014, and Virginia in 2017.
The much-anticipated debut of Publix in Kentucky will take place at the Louisville location on 2500 Terra Crossing Blvd. The grand opening celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, January 10, 2024. The 48,387-square-foot store at the Oak Grove Shoppes opened its doors on Dec. 7, replacing an older location nearby.
