Propane fueled car overturned during train derailment in Florida

BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) — Officials in Florida are closely monitoring a train car carrying 30,000 gallons of propane that overturned as a result of a derailment along the Gulf Coast.

A Seminole Gulf Railway freight train derailed Tuesday at an industrial estate near Sarasota Bradenton International Airport, about 52 miles (82 km) south of Tampa. Of the six cars that overturned, five were drywall, officials said.

Emergency and fire crews arrived on the scene, and officials said no one was hurt.

Southern Manatee Fire and Rescue Chief Robert Bounds told news outlets that another propane vehicle did not tip over. He said that it might take several days and a lot of heavy equipment to get the wagons in order and repair the tracks.

“We’ll be there when they do, with all of our staff and equipment ready to act in case something goes wrong,” Bounds said Tuesday night.

Bounds said there was no immediate threat to the population, but if the situation changed, an evacuation order would be issued. Crews monitored the air quality in the surrounding area.

Officials said the train was heading south when the derailment occurred and the cause was not immediately known. An investigation is underway.

This derailment follows what happened on February 3, when 38 cars of a Norfolk Southern freight train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, evacuating about half of the city’s 4,000 residents. No one was injured or killed, but the accident and its aftermath endangered the entire village and surrounding areas, leading to an ongoing interstate emergency response and ongoing rural concerns about long-term health effects.
