HUNTSVILLE, Texas – In the early hours of Friday morning, a fire broke out at the Huntsville Unit, leading to the evacuation of hundreds of inmates. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice swiftly responded, relocating approximately 655 inmates to a secure location within the facility. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The fire was first reported at around 2:30 a.m., prompting an immediate response from the Huntsville Fire Department. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, mutual aid was requested from several other fire departments, emphasizing the coordinated efforts to quickly control the situation.

By 6:30 a.m., Huntsville Fire Department Chief Greg Mathis announced that the fire had been contained. However, firefighters continued their diligent work to extinguish any remaining small fires, displaying an unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone involved.

While assessing the extent of the damage, TDCJ Communications Director Amanda Hernandez shared crucial details. She explained that the fire primarily affected the attic of the West Building and extended to the attic and third floor of the Administration Building.
