Prince Harry and wife Meghan asked to leave UK royal house

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan have been asked to leave their UK home, signaling a further weakening of ties with the royal family as his father, King Charles III, prepares to be crowned.

Frogmore Cottage on the grounds of Windsor Castle, west of London, was conceived as the couple’s main residence before they stepped down from royal duties and moved to Southern California. The Sun reported that Charles began the eviction process on January 11, the day after Harry’s explosive memoir Spare was published.

“We can confirm that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been asked to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage,” a spokesperson for the couple said in a statement.

The revelations Harry made in The Substitutes deepened the rift between him and his family. The book included his account of private conversations with his father and brother, Prince William.

After they left the UK, Harry and Meghan said that Frogmore Cottage would remain their base when they arrived in the UK.

In September 2020, a spokesperson announced that the couple had paid back £2.4 million ($3.2 million) of British taxpayer money that was used to renovate the house while they were working members of the royal family.

According to a spokesman, the money “fully covered” the cost of the repairs.
