Port St. Lucie group founder aids Haiti in humanitarian efforts

Amid the ongoing violence and chaos in Haiti, the already dire situation continues to worsen. Concerns are mounting among those on the ground in the Caribbean nation, as well as individuals with loved ones in the region, regarding the scarcity of essentials and food in cities outside of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Meschac St. Amour, the founder and president of Habitat for Children Ministries based in Port St. Lucie, recently arrived in Haiti on a mission. St. Amour disclosed that they transported approximately 1,500 pounds of supplies, including food, to the country. However, this amount only scratches the surface of the pressing needs on the ground.

Now, the focus shifts to the daunting task of sourcing and delivering additional resources to the affected areas. St. Amour expressed his determination to assess the situation firsthand, organize a response team, and strategize for the future. Despite the challenges, he remains resolute, stating, “I know where I can direct stuff from the states coming down.”

Currently stationed in the town of Pignon, located several hours away from the epicenter of the crisis in Port-au-Prince, St. Amour faces logistical hurdles due to the blockage of roads leading to the capital. In a poignant encounter with a local resident, he learned about the harsh realities faced by the community, with individuals struggling to secure basic necessities for survival.

Reflecting on the scarcity of goods and the high cost of temporary solutions, St. Amour emphasized the financial constraints associated with procuring essential supplies locally. Despite the challenges ahead, he remains committed to exploring all avenues to provide aid and relief to the vulnerable populations in Haiti during this tumultuous period.
