Poll: US voters ‘strongly prefer’ capitalism to socialism

U.S. voters “strongly prefer” capitalism to socialism, a sentiment that has intensified since April 2021, a Rasmussen Reports poll found.

Only 17 percent of 900 likely US voters polled between February 5 and 7 prefer socialism to capitalism. According to the poll, which has a sampling error of ±3 percentage points and a 95 percent confidence level, 67 percent prefer capitalism, up from 65 percent in 2021.

The results came after the Republican-led House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning the “horrors of socialism.” Cuban-American Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL) introduced a resolution against socialism, a symbolic move that declares the country “based on the belief in the integrity of the individual, to which the collectivist system of socialism in all its manifestations and forms is fundamentally and inevitably opposed.”

The text of the resolution notes that “many of the greatest crimes in history” were committed by socialist ideologues such as Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin and Hugo Chavez.

“While the socialist ideology requires the concentration of power, which has folded over and over again into communist regimes, totalitarian rule and brutal dictatorships,” the resolution says.

The resolution was ultimately passed by two parties, with 328 votes in favor and 86 against. House Republicans unanimously supported the bill along with 126 House Democrats.

The poll also showed that 53 percent of voters would not vote for a candidate who supported socialism. 28% of respondents said they would vote for a candidate who supports socialism, while 19% are unsure.

Broken down by political affiliation, Republicans are more likely to support capitalism and oppose socialism.

“Eighty-one percent (81 percent) of Republicans believe capitalism is a better system than socialism, a sentiment shared by 58 percent of Democrats and 62 percent of non-majority voters,” the poll report says. “More than a quarter of Democrats (26 percent) like socialism more than 11 percent of Republicans and 15 percent of independent voters.”

Democrats (47 percent) are far more likely than Republicans and independents to vote for a candidate who claims to support socialism. Seventy-four percent of Republican voters and 51 percent of unaffiliated voters would not vote for a pro-socialist candidate.

Many voters do believe America is “drifting towards socialism,” the poll report says.

“Twenty-eight percent (28 percent) say the US economy today is at least partially socialist, including eight percent (8 percent) who say the US economy is generally socialist. This is slightly less than in April 2021, when 30 percent believed that the US economy was at least partially socialist, ”the study says.

The drift towards socialism may be partly due to the fact that younger voters are less likely to prefer capitalism. The poll showed that only 45 percent of voters under 40 say capitalism is better than socialism, while the vast majority in any other age group support capitalism. More than a third (34%) of voters under 40 think socialism is better, compared to 11% of voters aged 40-64 and 7% of voters aged 65 and over.
