Police seek public’s help in identifying remains in unsolved 2021 case.

The Austin Police Department (APD) is appealing to the public to assist in uncovering the identity of an unknown male whose skeletal remains were found in a wooded area near Alum Rock Drive in Southeast Austin on December 20th, 2021.

Law enforcement officials stated that the unidentified person is believed to have been between 16 and 20 years old at the time of his demise, with a possible ethnic background of being White or Hispanic, and investigators also suspect that he possessed black hair and brown eyes. However, detectives, at present, cannot determine the person’s height and weight. Despite extensive efforts, the identity of the decedent remains unknown.

According to sources, it has been revealed that in January 2022, details of the case were entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) as #UP87802. In addition, a forensic artist with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children created a forensic drawing to provide a depiction of what the individual might have looked like.

As of 2023, Austin police team upped with Othram, a corporation specializing in forensic genealogy, to generate new leads in the case.

The Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office has urged anyone with information that could be helpful to the investigation to contact them by calling 512-854-9599 and referencing agency case number 21-07855 or NamUs #UP87802. Additionally, a DNASolves crowdfund has been started to raise funds to cover the remaining casework expenses, and individuals are welcome to contribute at any time.

The APD is determined to identify the individual and has requested the public’s support to solve this case. The skeletal remains found would undoubtedly get justice once the piece comes together, and an identity is established.
