Police say a man in Denver shot and killed a 12-year-old allegedly driving a stolen car.

A car theft turned fatal over a weekend in Denver, Colorado, when a man used an app to track his stolen car, leading to a “shootout” according to police.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, identified as a 12-year-old boy, died in the shooting, FOX 31 reported, citing authorities.

The incident first came to light on Sunday, when a man reported that his car had been stolen and said he was tracking the car using an app. Denver Police Department.

The unidentified owner of the car eventually tracked the car about 11 miles from where it was stolen, police said.

“When the owner of the vehicle approached the car, he engaged in a shootout with the passenger(s) in the stolen vehicle,” the police said in a statement.

Police said the underage man stole a stolen car a couple of blocks away, where officers found him with a gunshot wound. The teenager was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

Police said it appeared that the other occupants of the car had fled on foot before police arrived.

On Tuesday, the Denver Medical Examiner’s Office identified the teen as Elias Armstrong, 12, and his death was ruled a homicide, FOX 31 reported.

Police said the carjacking victim who shot the boy was contacted at the scene and had not yet been arrested as of Tuesday. The case remains under investigation.

“In accordance with standard procedure, upon completion of the investigation, the results will be submitted to the Denver District Attorney’s office for consideration of possible charges,” the police said in a statement.
