Police looking for shooter who shot San Antonio firefighters

Two rescuers received very light injuries.

SAN ANTONIO. People who live and work near the site where San Antonio firefighters were shot say police have combed the area, asking everyone if they have video footage of the daring attack.

The Bandera shooting scene near Callaghan Road was a chilling scene around 2 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters were at the strip center responding to a call from doctors when they were caught in the middle of the violence.

Fire department spokesman Woody Woodward said someone drove up to the crew on engine 23 and said they were being watched.

“There was a dispute between those who were in the vehicles. The crew then heard gunfire from those vehicles and started to take cover,” Woodward said, adding that it appeared the firefighters were not the intended target.

Radio communications showed that as the bullets flew, the firefighters ducked for cover and then fled the area.

Two firefighters suffered minor cuts and were treated at the scene at a nearby fire station.

Radio broadcasts at the time indicated that the suspect vehicle was a silver Toyota truck, but on Monday, San Antonio police said they were not ready to confirm information about the wanted vehicle at this time, adding that they expected it to be the focus of a crime. Stopper effort coming soon.

Police initially said that if arrested, the charge could be related to aggravated assault on a government official.
