Plane on takeoff almost collided with another at John F. Kennedy Airport
Two planes nearly collided at JFK on Friday when one overran the runway as the other was about to take off, officials said.
The chilling incident, which took place on Friday the 13th, is currently under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Around 8:45 p.m., the crew spotted an American Airlines jet crossing the runway from a nearby taxiway just as the Delta Air Lines plane was about to take off.
The Delta pilots hit the brakes in time to avoid the tragedy – the plane with more than 150 people stopped just 300 meters from the American Airlines plane, CNN reports.
The takeoff was aborted after air traffic controllers “saw another aircraft crossing the runway in front of the departing airliner,” the FAA said in a statement.
No one was hurt, but it caused Delta passengers bound for the Dominican Republic to miss one night on the journey, a Delta spokesperson told The Post on Saturday.
Delta Flight 1943 returned to its gate and ordered its 145 passengers and six crew members to leave. The flight was rescheduled for Saturday morning and customers were given hotel rooms for the night.
“The safety of our customers and crew is always Delta’s number one priority,” the airline said in a statement.
American Airlines did not respond to the comment.
FlightAware data shows that the aircraft involved – Flight 106 – was bound for London Heathrow Airport. The plane took off on Friday and arrived in the UK on time on Saturday morning.
